James E. Court, B.Comm.,CMA
Jim started his accounting career with his father in 1973 while in high school working part-time and in the summer on small business bookkeeping, accounting, T1s and municipal audits. This continued through until 1980 when he graduated for the University of Manitoba with a Commerce degree (honours) and entered into partnership with his father. In 1984 he entered the CMA program completing his professional designation in 1985 and earning the Manitoba Society’s gold medal as well as attaining the highest mark on the financial accounting exam.
Shortly afterwards, he went to work for the Canadian Grain Commission as a compliance auditor ( high level security clearance…held search and seizure authority) although he continued to work on the numerous small business accounts of the partnership. In 1988, he returned to the practice full-time taking it over from his father.
In addition to providing business and tax advice to a variety of industries he has appeared as an expert witness in 2 Court of Queens bench cases involving business valuations, appeared as counsel in numerous Tax Court cases and has also been involved in several business sales and purchases. Presently he is the public practice reviewer and practice advisor for the Society of Management Accountants of Manitoba and also presents several seminars annually for them. Prior to this he served on the Education and Public Practice Review Committees for the Society. In 2004 he was re-appointed as the Society’s auditor, (a position he had previously held for 10 years) but had resigned from due to a conflict of interest when his business partner (Larry Scarth) became an officer of the Society.
He has been active with many not-for-profit organizations, serving on the boards of the Manitoba Highland Dancers and the Scottish Association of Winnipeg acting as treasurer for both these groups for many years. In 1992 he served on the committee (as treasurer) hosting the National Highland Dancing championships held in Winnipeg. Presently he is serving as the President of the Scottish Association following a 3-year term as the coordinator of the Pavilion of Scotland and is a member of the licensing committee for the Folk Arts Council. In addition, the firm audits over 20 not-for-profit organizations annually.
In 1995 he entered into a partnership with Lawrence Scarth CMA CFP and in 2002 the firm expanded with the addition of Chris Filopoulos, B.A., CMA as a partner.
Chris Filopoulos, B.A.,CMA
Chris holds a professional certification as a Certified Management Accountant and is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a B.A. (Economics) degree. His 14 years in business as a financial accountant, controller and for the past 10 years consultant and public accountant has provided him with a wide range of experiences.
Chris has worked in various industries from manufacturing enterprises to food processing companies. He has also worked with larger national companies in the wholesale tool industry and in the restaurant and hospitality industry. In recent years as a consultant he has worked with business owners providing business advice and training in all areas of business to improve the efficiencies and the processes of a business.
As a public accountant Chris has provided more than just tax advice and financial statement preparation services to the clients he works with. Budgets, financial forecasting and computerized accounting systems consulting are some of the areas of expertise that he can provide business owners.
His training brings to the table advanced management skills to: information technology, sales and marketing, risk management, organizational behavior and strategic planning. This combined with his experience in a various industries can provide business owners with the advice needed to shape the future of their business enterprises.
In 2002 Chris Filopoulos joined Jim and Larry in their practice as a partner in the new firm – Court Scarth Filopoulos Certified Management Accountants. In 2006 Larry Scarth retired.
